Artwork and production

How do LED billboards handle sunlight, rain and the monsoon?

Outdoor LED screens are built far brighter than any television and adjust through the day, so they stay readable in direct sun and do not glare at night. The structures are weather-rated and sealed; monsoon affects mounting schedules for printed faces far more than it affects screens.

Two worries come up in almost every first conversation: will anyone see it at two in the afternoon, and what happens when it rains for a week. Both are reasonable. Both have fairly boring answers, which is the best kind.

Sunlight

An outdoor LED billboard is engineered to be many times brighter than the screen you are reading this on. It has to be — it is competing with the sky. Brightness is managed automatically through the day so the screen stays readable at noon without becoming a hazard after dark, which matters as much for the drivers as it does for you.

What sunlight does punish is weak artwork. A washed-out palette that looked refined in a meeting room will vanish in direct light. This is the practical reason we push so hard on contrast.

Rain and monsoon

The panels are sealed and the structures are engineered for local wind and rain loads. A wet week is, for a digital screen, an ordinary week — and arguably a good one, since traffic slows further and dwell time goes up.

The monsoon’s real effect is on printed campaigns. Mounting a skin needs a crew, access equipment and a dry window. That is why static lead times stretch between June and September, and why a hard launch date in that period is better served by digital.
